Yes Jon You are right.

However the original question was WRKQRY, I suggested to try a SQL 
solution, my error in mentioning RPG.

Also I am fully aware that fundamentally everything in a computer is a 
string of ons and offs.
Even signed Int have a bit pattern that has a more fundamental binary 
representation.

What I was trying to say is I never understood the point of converting 
Character data to Integer.
I guess it has something to do with how different OS represent the bit 
patterns as various data types.

IMO there is something more fundamentally wrong when trying to join 
files using fields of different type.
The solution is a band aid on a mortal wound.
