I reply to myself - just looked up binary string data types - here's what I found in the SQL manual -

* In ILE RPG, a BINARY fixed-length binary-string variable is declared
using the SQLTYPE keyword.

Seems that what you said, David, should work. One of these days I'll know more than I do now! I hope!

This almost starts to become a case of it looks easier to use the API QMHRTVPM, I think that's it - there is an article out there about bracketing job log messages, in order to delete anything you don't want, and the technique there might be helpful - ah here's a link - https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/receiving-messages-joblog-after-program-callstack

I know it offers an alternative to the "wonderful" stuff we have with SQL, but I have to see a real use of the service first - maybe the OP should go to Scott Forstie's Gist page at https://gist.github.com/forstie

to be clear, I need the value I get, being the message key, able to directly pass into the qmhrmvpm (Remove message) api. The api says
the message key parm is to be char(4).

I think you need to use the SQLTYPE on your variable definition.
SQLTYPE(BINARY:4), I think, will result in a CHAR(4) field that embedded
SQL will understand.
