Here's what I've done in the past.

1. Setup up IBM AFP600 printer in Windows

a. Get AFP printer drivers from
http://www.printers.ibm.com/internet/wwsites.nsf/vwwebpublished/supportdownloads_ww

b. Download the file and extract it.

c. Go to “Printers” and “Add a new printer”

d. Click the “Have disk” option

e. Navigate to the AFP driver directory (as created above)

f. Select the .INF file

g. Select the 600 DPI printer driver

h. The printer (IBM AFP 600) will be installed

2. Open MS Word

a. Create the document to use as the overlay

b. CTRL+A to select all

c. CTRL+C to copy

3. Open MS Paint

a. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, Paint

b. CTRL+V to paste (from the Word document)

c. Click Yes "the image in the clipboard is larger than the
bitmap."

d. Center or align the image by dragging it (watch for the
left margin)

4. Print from MS Paint to AFP600 printer file

i. Click
File, Page Setup

ii. Click
landscape, set the margins left, top, right, bottom to 0.25

iii. Uncheck
“Centering vertical and horizontal”

iv. Click
OK

v. Click
File, Print

vi. Click
printer file name, and select IBM AFP 600

vii. Click
Preferences

viii. Click
Output Type: Overlay

ix. Click
OK

x. Click
Print

xi. Type
in the file name "C:\{your_folder}\Overlay.prn"

xii. Click
OK

1. Print PDF
1. Use Generic InfoPrint 600DPI driver to print to a .PRN file
2. Properties

i. Output
type=OVERLAY

ii. Print
Text as Graphics=NO

1. The easy way to finish the process is to use [my secret] command
XZM030, which creates the overlay and prints a test page.

1. Create an AS400 physical file
1. CRTPF FILE(OVERLAY) RCDLEN(32766) TEXT(OVERLAY) LVLCHK(*NO)
2. Make sure that Overlay.prn is not larger than 32K

1. Copy printer file to AS400 QDLS
1. Start Operations Navigator
2. Open “File systems”
3. Open target system’s QDLS
4. Add a folder to QDLS

1. Start Windows Explorer
1. Find “Overlay.prn”
2. Drag Overlay.prn to the folder in QDLS (copy)

1. Copy overlay into work file
1. CPYFRMPCD FROMFLR(your_folder) TOFILE(OVERLAY)
FROMDOC(OVERLAY.PRN) TRNTBL(*NONE) TRNFMT(*NOTEXT)

1. Create overlay (personal preference: overlay name is same as printer
file name)
1. CRTOVL OVL(your_library/your_overlay_name) FILE(OVERLAY)
MBR(OVERLAY) TEXT(OVERLAY)

1. Add overlay to printer file
1. CHGPRTF {printer_file_name} DEVTYPE(*AFPDS)
RONTOVL(your_library/your_overlay_name)

Way back I used the AFP printer driver to "print" to an overlay drawn in
Word or Paint and then upload that to the 400
Then compile it with CRTOVL

Google is your friend: "AFP Driver"

Or, you can use mental image and create lines and boxes in a AFPDS type
PRTF

Subject: How do I create overlays on v7.4

Caution: This email originates from outside of Fresche | Attention: Ce
message provient de l'extérieur de Fresche

Its been a long time since I created an overlay and IBM changed something
on how to create the overlays.

Does anyone know what the procedure is or is there a way using the DDS in
a printer file that will let me create boxes and lines?

TIA
