I suspect that the fact that you are using MOVE is what made John (and I) think that you were using RPG III.
I see. I tried RPG III once (so I could leave all that ILE stuff aside to have an easier start) and I was instantly appalled by the lack of horizontal space. This made me quickly adopt RPG IV.
I once even tried something super simple on the TK4- "Turnkey" MVS System. It has an RPG I compiler. Brr. <shudder>
MOVE was supported in the original RPG IV but was only there for compatibility and was discouraged in favor of EVAL. It has been basically deprecated since way back when /Free first came in 15+ years ago (V5?) and MOVE was deliberately not supported.
I learned all my habits and skills from two main sources: The ILE RPG Programmer's Guide with the accompanying reference, and by searching the web. The latter often directed me to mcpressonline.com.
I can't recall notes about deprecation in that manual. But it's several years now I've read that. I just need the reference occasionally. For example to look up which of the indicator positions for READxx have which meaning.
I can nearly *see* you shuddering. ;-)
