The JDBCC-ODBC architecture is not the main thing, as I see it - it's reserved for things like MS Access and others that don't have JDBC providers. So for me it's not an issue of layers or RAM or whatever, since there should be little need for it.

A lot of layers of indirection. But with today's sheer processing power and more than enough RAM, this is mostly just a matter of my personal taste. Don't want to start a debate on principles (again). ;-)

I believe that Dieter Bender's ArdGate is similar.
That's also how I understood it.
