The critical thing to note is "just begins in column 8" - actually column 7 is OK for comments etc.

If you start in column 7/8 and only use up to and including position 80 for source code then the code can be anything - including dcl type free syntax.

You'd have to do it this way if you want to use O-specs for example.

I use it quite a bit in teaching examples as I need somewhere to put the (x) markers that I use to label individual code lines.
