I believe IBM's recommendation is to use dynamic SQL. You build your SELECT statement and PREPARE it.

Alternatively, I have avoided dynamic SQL in the past by using a "BETWEEN" construct rather than switches.

In the WHERE I would have something like 'cuszip beteen :ziplow and :ziphigh'.

- If just one zip was needed both ziplow and ziphigh would contain that zip.
- If there was no zip selection the values would be 00000 and 99999 to include all zips.
- If a range was needed they would contain the zip range.

I suspect that this technique will not disqualify the use of indexes, though it might cause the query to be re-optimized. But IBM is likely to suggest against this as it may impact performance. I had no performance issues, but as always, your mileage may vary.
