Well that's pretty much identical to RPG400 so my position doesn't change.

RPG400 was just RPG III with a few very minor changes and there is zero reason to keep it.

The simple answer is to convert it to RPGIV and use Rename.

Is that not on option? Why would you keep it in RPG III?

Regardless the RENAME keyword on the F-spec continuation line is probably what you need. But since RPG400 can use 10 character record names I'm having problems understanding why this is an issue. If the table was created with SQL it will have short names for everything anyway.
