What "sort of technique" are you talking about? If some user decides
to change their 5250 emulator settings to something garish, it doesn't
matter whether the RPG programmer has used hex codes or not. It
doesn't even matter if the RPG programmer has done any display file
programming whatsoever. Right out of the box, IBM has already used
several colors and attributes, and given the user plenty of rope.
Heck, even if the display is defined to have nothing but green text on
a black background, there's nothing to prevent the user from mapping
those two colors to something grotesque and unviewable.

Going in the other direction, it doesn't matter if the user has left
the factory default settings intact; an RPG programmer with poor taste
can build a garish display file that will give you a headache.

So, if you don't like the hex codes thing, fine, but that has nothing
to do with the user.

And if you don't like remapping colors on the client side, fine, but
that has nothing to do with using hex codes in the display.
