Make sure that when you create your table create meaningful short and long
names. Same rules, first two or three characters id, use full 10 characters
if you need them for short name. When you use a long table name, make sure
you put a comment with the short name next to the SQL. Remember that a lot
of tools like DBU and otherwise don't use long names and everyone who use
the table may not want to use the long names.

Using long File Names and long field names is possible, you have to
specify the short name with the ExtDesc Keyword and for compiling also add
ExtFile(*ExtDesc) to your F-spec.
After you can use the long file names.
For using the long column/field names just add Alias to the F-specs

DCL-F Your_Long_Table_Name
ExtDesc('SHORTNAME') ExtFile(*ExtDesc) Keyed
Alias;

Chain (Key1, Key2) Your_Long_Table_Name;

Subject: Using long names

Let's say you created a table like this:
Create table I_like_long_names for system name shortname ( My_column_name
for column C01 varchar(100),
...)

And you want to use just the long names in RPG, can this be done with
dcl-f I_like_long_names disk keyed usage(*update) alias; // alias says to
use the long column names

Or do you have to do something like this to use the long table name too?
dcl-f file1 disk keyed usage(*update) alias extdesc(i_like_long_names);
