Thanks all! Dave, that was the first method I tried.

My problem was twofold
1. I was using SQL to retrieve the string - you can't do that directly into RA0094
2. The array needs ASCEND or DESCEND to use %lookuple

In fixed format it was really easy to overlay data like this:

D ds
D RF94 1 84a Dim(14)
D RA0094 1 84a

I could easily eval a text string into RA0094 and "parse" the data
into (in this case) 14 six-character fields.
I need to use %lookup on RF94.

The following will allow you to set (eval) the data structure name to your 84-character string and then do a %lookup on the array inside the data structure.

dcl-ds RA0094;
RF94 Char(6) Dim(14);
end-ds

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
