To my understanding, CGI programming is a long obsolete way of doing web
pages. That much more modern ways exist of generating HTML and building

pages.

Am I correct here?

I think only the term is or has been falling into disuse. Anything
that uses an HTTP POST, GET, PUT, etc. is using what has been termed CGI
programming.
