My first programming language was RPG. After learning RPGIV on the job, I learned Java and then branched out to other programming languages. Now I still program with RPG mainly but also write code with python, perl, java, and the various web scripting languages out there. RPG was definitely my gateway language though.

Okay, John, so if I read your reply correctly, "....someone with the other
skill, but who can also do RPG..." does that imply that RPG developers are
single trick ponies? That we do not program in other languages as well as
RPG? To go back to the old days when the term "big iron bigot" was used to
describe many COBOL developers, and later was applied to RPG developers as
well, I would say there are a vast larger number of "PC bigots" that feel
only the small machine matters and the larger ones have no value. They are
only Java, only VB, only PHP, and such. The number of multi-language,
primary RPG, developers is much larger than most think and I profess that,
again using your reply as the example, a good RPG programmer will be able to
pick up whatever other language fairly easily, if they have not already done
so with one or more other languages.

Out of curiosity, may I ask why you went with two devs with no IBM i /

Obviously your question was not directed at me, and it's a fair question,
but there is at least one obvious and well-justified possibility that comes
to my mind immediately, especially for the Java/C programmer:

The shop may specifically want someone with the other skill, but who can
also do RPG. A good programmer in whatever language will be able to pick up
RPG fairly easily.

My first job out of college (and the whole reason I wound up on the midrange
platform at all) was at a 100% RPG/CL shop, but they specifically recruited
anyone who was good at math or had any programming background.
