Re: 3-part SQL and Aliases -- RPG400-L

By the way Dave thanks for taking the time to throw some example code in
for me.
And to both of you for replying and helping me out :-)

I haven't tested all of the ins and outs but actually CONNECT does work
with SVRAUTE which is nice.

Then, using two RDB entries and two SVRAUT entries, I can connect to either
and the jobd of the associated profile on the remote box determines the
library list.

e.g:
Work with Relational Database Directory Entries

Position to . . . . . .

Type options, press Enter.
1=Add 2=Change 4=Remove 5=Display details 6=Print details

Remote

and

RMTPRF1 gives me ( for example ) a Test Environment on the remote box (
determined by the JobD associated with RMTPRF1 on the remote box )
RMTPRF2 gives me ( for example ) a Prod Environment on the remote box (
determined by the JobD associated with RMTPRF2 on the remote box )

In the RPG I only need to specify Connect to RMTBOX or Connect to RMTALIAS.
No credentials need to be specified they get picked up from the SVRAUT it
seems.

The SQL file access is unqualified.

I'm not completely clear why I don't see SQL Packages in the remote system
libraries like I did before.
Also I need to read up on how long the connect will stay open and what
happens if it times out.
I intend to leave *LR off in the program and only connect on startup if
that seems to be feasible.

Dave Clark - confusingly the Test and Prod are both on the other LPAR so
both remote. This program is running on a different LPAR.

go down that route as some of the SQL is already a bit involved.

By default, your program is connected to the local database. You
can explicitly connect to the remote database and you do not lose your
local database connection. Thus, you can then switch back and forth
between the two connections as needed. Your other SQL doesn't even have
to use 3-part references as long as you don't need to access tables on
both systems at the same time. Alternately just requires switching
connections (SET CONNECTION). But, at the same time requires 3-part
references.
