Would it be simpler, in the end, to have e couple or more data structures and only 1 parm?

Something like:

     d wLayout1     e ds                  extname(FILE1) prefix('W1')
     d wLayout2     e ds                  extname(FILE2) prefix('W2')
     d wLayout3     e ds                  extname(FILE3) prefix('W3')
...
d writeb          pi

is it possible to define this so that it take any "type" as a second parm. Then within the routine, determine what that parm type is and proceed as needed.

writeb('desc1' : 'this is a string');
writeb('desc2' : 123.24);
