I am very comfortable recommending Brad's MAILTOOL, especially the
Plus!
add-on, and that was indeed my first thought when I saw this thread.

However, for those who have to stick to a zero-dollar option for
e-mail, why
not try MMAIL?

It's not as robust as MAILTOOL Plus! but at least it is actively
maintained
(unlike some code snippet from 1998), and is in widespread use.
