situation just designed to overcomplicate things.

It /is/ a theoretical situation! The point was to gently move the mind
to a place where there is any architecture that avoids the problem of
update collision via Unit Record I/O. Once we see that such a thing is
possible, we can begin to think of practical ways to implement the idea.
