I've been using an RPG service program for about 15 years. It's a wrapper
around the Db2 CLI functions. It provides the benefits of dynamic SQL, plus
the benefit of externalizing SQL from our RPG programs.
We're not mixing 2 languages in 1 source member, nor running 2 language
environments in 1 Job. This reduces the size of programs and the memory
requirements of applications. The SQL runs in a pool of QSQSRVR Jobs rather
than the Job that is running the RPG code.
I call the service program my "cursor" API. Following is a link that
