What I mean is: Why should JSON be external, but Base64 not be? Is it
just because the implementation of Base64 is "smaller"?

Yes, the main reason is that JSON relies on library YAJL; i don't want the
base implementation be dependent on this.

The code for Base64 support is small, it's just one sourcemember which i
can include directly in the source.
So no dependency on some library.

What makes Base64 worth being part of the project, but JSON not?

Like i said earlier, JSON (and other external formats) should be
implemented in a separate project.

What I mean is: Why should JSON be external, but Base64 not be? Is it
just because the implementation of Base64 is "smaller"?
