Hi Jon

I've been in the camp of not getting with XMLTABLE. I sat in on one of Birgitta's session at COMMON and saw the light - at least for our situation.

We're at 7.1, and all the RPG-based stuff makes for a major struggle when dealing with these emojis. XMLTABLE does the job so cleanly - it just gives us an x'3F' for any problem stuff - no fancy dancing needed - and you know that's a good thing where this body is concerned!

Laying out XMLTABLE columns turns out to be very like the data structures for XML-INTO, seems to me. But it is the final flattened layout of a table, no nesting needed - you can bounce up and down within the DOM tree to flatten out stuff nicely.

That's as much as I can say in the time I don't have right now!

Cheers
Vern

Mike,

I really wish I could understand why people like XMLTABLE so much. I have used XML-INTO, XML-SAX, PHP XML facilities, etc. but the joys of the XMLTABLE syntax elude me. I've looked at many examples from Birgitta and others and still the joy eludes me.

Where did you find enlightenment?

Hi Nathan,

An XML document can be comprised of multiple, identifiable sets of data.
In the presence of multiple sets of data, one would need to call XMLTABLE
once for each distinct set that required extraction. You're not going to
be able to use only a single call to XMLTABLE, unless only a single set of
data is contained within the hierarchy that required extraction.

That should hopefully make more sense now.

At least in the context of multiple sets of data, XMLTABLE is extracting an
entire set at a time, instead of the other techniques I'm vaguely familiar
with, where one extracts a single element at a time.

I'd be shocked if XMLTABLE, which uses a SET based approach, doesn't
perform faster.

I haven't used XMLTABLE yet. But I'm a little perplexed about mapping
hierarchically structured "documents" to "tables". Vern indicated that he
would be populating about 13 tables from apparently one XML document.
