An XML document can be comprised of multiple, identifiable sets of data.
In the presence of multiple sets of data, one would need to call XMLTABLE
once for each distinct set that required extraction. You're not going to
be able to use only a single call to XMLTABLE, unless only a single set of
data is contained within the hierarchy that required extraction.


That makes sense. But it underscores that the developer must know the
content of the XML document in order to instruct the parser on how to parse
it.
