That's because the love of programming is the root of all evil ;-) They
used to pay programmers by the number of lines of code they wrote; the
company's code base ballooned. The business became dependent on it. The
executives didn't know how to maintain it, so they had to hire more
programmers just in case a bug or two brought operations to a halt.
Programmers would spend most of their time learning code created by someone
else who experimented with structure, style, and scope with every program
they wrote.
