In regard to your running out of enthusiasm for RPG, I've written a couple

If your employer is just looking to have you maintain legacy code, I find
the RPG reference material in the IBM i Knowledge Center to be quite
helpful.
RPG is an easy language to learn. However if you're tasked with analyzing a
large legacy code base, and making sense out of it, the normal learning
materials won't help much. You may run into design patterns and naming
conventions that are out-of-date.
