Is it possible something changes the CLASSPATH between signon and when your code starts the JVM? I know we have some 3rd party software that silently uses Java.

yes, we do use both (JDBCR4 and HSSF/POI)...
however, we only use the HSSF/POI in batch...
we set the CLASSPATH at signon.
