my last go at coding an EDI system I added a number of control files. To
the point where the RPG code was executing instructions stored in the
control files. Not RPG code, but things like having the control file
control what qualifiers to use in the PO1 segment of an 850. The control
file would say to place the *PRODCODE or *UPCNBR in the edi segment line.

The EDI system got pretty complicated. Not saying RPG code that creates EDI
files is not complicated also. Just that it is not so easy to say that one
approach is always better than the other.
