Actually, CMPPFM can do side by side with the right options:

CMPPFM NEWFILE(MyLib/MySrcFile)
NEWMBR(MyMbr)
OLDFILE(MyOldLib/MySrcFile)
OLDMBR(MyMbr)
RPTTYPE(*DETAIL)
OPTION(*NARROW)

You can also use OPTION(*WIDE), but *NARROW is usually enough for me.

Thanks for the heads-up. I can definitely see *NARROW being very
useful for free-form code. Most of our code is columnar (making
increasing use of extended factor 2, but that still leaves a huge
wasteland on the left). I use CMPPFM mostly as a quick on-screen tool,
which limits the usefulness of *WIDE.

Honestly, if you're used to Unix's diff, the default settings for
CMPPFM are not bad. I actually often find it easier to see the
difference between two lines when they're arranged like that rather
than side-by-side. (Fancier tools for other platforms can highlight
differences within lines, and have synchronized left-and-right
scrolling, which increase the utility of the side-by-side view.)
