Fortunately the manager (who was also new on the job) had a passing
familiarity with java so he approved /free for new development.
My compadres write in ALL CAPS with 6-char field names and largely
maintain existing code on our 1990's-era ERP. They are competent
programmers towards the end of their careers and as long as they can write
a SFL inquiry with their existing skills then they see no compelling reason
to do anything differently.

Were you allowed to continue with RPG Free? If so, do all of them feel
the same way today? Have some of them moved to Free, too?

When I came on-board a couple of years ago, the greybeards I work with
language I used. They were concerned they wouldn't be able to maintain the
code in case of an emergency. Now imagine trying to make those guys quit
using SEU!

Democracy is a form of government in which it is permitted to wonder aloud
what the country could do under first-class management.
