Well, you and I are talking about different contexts within a worksheet -
my point was limited to data types in a column - Excel allows any data
types in different cells in a given column.

Your point is well taken, although it addresses a different issue,
methinks.

Excel would open that just fine - it could care less about numeric vs
alpha
in the ZIP column.

Excel does care, often more than we would like. Excel has a very
strong opinion about what should be a number, and it's extremely
awkward (in a CSV) to convince Excel to treat "numeric-looking" data
as character.
