Sorry guys I am not signed up for the CL programming mailing list.
Hope you can help.

There is no list for CL programming. That topic would falls under the domain of the midrange-l group\list. Rather than posting off-topic messages here, [a more appropriate choice IMNSHO would be to] just subscribe to the appropriate forum and participate there.

I have a character variable with numeric data.
This holds number of copies that will be used on the OVRPRTF commnd.

DCL VAR(&COPYCHR) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(1) VALUE(' ')
DCL VAR(&COPIES) TYPE(*DEC) LEN(1 0) VALUE(1)

CHGVAR VAR(&COPIES) VALUE(&COPYCHR)

Let us say the value of &COPYCHR is a '3' before the CHGVAR command.
After the CHGVAR executes, the value of &COPIES remains a 1.

What seems to be my problem ?

Quite moot really, what might be the issue, as there is no reason to use the decimal variable; i.e. just use OVRPRTF COPIES(&COPYCHR) for an inline command\statement or use 'OVRPRTF COPIES(' *CAT &COPYCHR *CAT ')' when generating a command string to be sent to an interpreter.
