I have to agree with this, as well - in CAAC meetings with IBM we are often asked if we really want IBM to spend their finite resources in this area.

I'm also pretty sure that this request has come up before. And it has not resulted in a change in DSPPGM.

At the same time, the comparison with DSPFD is an apt one, IMO.

You can have it as a requirement Vern as long as I can vote against it.

Given the finite budget that is available for IBM i development I don't want my $s spent on adding a variant of a feature that I already have.

I suspect that had RPG, COBOL and CL had access to pointers those many moons ago outfiles might never have come into being and everything would be via APIs.

I agree completely - I had even thought of that but just didn't mention it for some reason - maybe figured there's not much hope it'd happen!!

But this could be an opportunity for a requirement!

Vern -

I respectfully disagree disagree. IBM *could* have provided this feature in the DSPPGM command.

For example - the Display File Description (DSPFD) command has numerous formats which can be specified based on the TYPE() and FILEATR() parms, with each format having a different *OUTFILE: https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r2/ic2924/index.htm?info/cl/dspfd.htm

IBM could have added similar capabilities to the DSPPGM command, allowing different formats with specific *OUTFILE formats based on the DETAIL() parm...

Hi Jose

I believe that DSPPGM does give a list of modules - it is just not on
the first page - if on the screen, press Enter 2 times and you are at
the module list.

The reason DSPPGM doesn't have an OUTFILE is that all the information is
in different formats. No single useful file would be of any use. So
there is only the *PRINT output option.

Now this list is only for ILE programs, of course.
