Even with only "a few hundred rows" that's wasted database I/O if the
user can usually be expected to find the record they're seeking on the
first or second subfile page. As others have said, for potentially large
subfiles a filtering or positioning option is probably more
user-friendly, and a piece of cake if SQL is your access method of
choice.

But, I don't agree that dynamically extending subfiles have "substantial
maintenance issues". I wrote my first one back on the System/38 and I'm
still copying and pasting that code into programs today! :-)

In my experience, there are many, many subfiles that are only a few
hundred rows. Those are ideal for load-all.

Subfiles have a limitation of 9999 rows, however it appears to me that
the practical limit is somewhere around 2500 rows. At 15 rows/screen,
getting to the end of a 2500 row subfile is 160 clicks. That is way too

many to be useful.

So, when a subfile is likely to be over a few hundred records, I look at

filtering, or two-stepping, to reduce the total number of records down
to a few hundred at a time. If that isn't practical I generally go with

a "Set to:" and then do single page subfiles. Dynamically extending
subfiles, with today's loading speeds, seem to me today to have limited
value and substantial maintenance issues.

The major problem with scroll bars as I see it is that they are only

Paging keys are built-in. Its automatic. You don't need to do
anything about the,m. To try out a scroll bar you only need to do
one
or two things.
*

1) SFLEND(*SCRBAR *MORE) instead of SFLEND(*MORE)

and, 2) if you haven't already, populate the SFLSIZ with the proper
number of records:
A SFLSIZ(&SF1RECS)
...
A SF1RECS 5S 0P
**

...
*

* Save values.
C eval SF1RECS = SF1NUM
*

(That makes the slider the correct proportion for the tray)

the scroll bar ?

Is the SFLEND conditioned with an indicator, set to the correct
condition?
Consider using a scroll bar? Users understand them, and you do not
need to leave an empty line at the bottom of the DSPF for the
MORE.../BOTTOM line. (

Yes, I know. I am scroll bar obsessed. Yes. I know. Green screen
is dead.

I just happened to notice that one of my "load all pages at once"
subfile screens is showing "more" at the bottom of the first screen
when there are only three records loaded.

It won't let me page down, but it's still showing "more," rather
than
"bottom."

In fact, on closer inspection, I see that if I load it with more
than
a full page of records, it shows "more" on the bottom of the second
page, even though there's less than a page.

I'm not sure, but I think the display file record definitions from
which I derived this screen were originally for "page at a time"
mode,
and that I probably screwed something up in the translation, but I'm
not sure where to look.
