Try the following after verifying the invoking process does indeed pass LogData by reference.

D pWrtScaleLog PR extpgm('SCALELOGR')

D LogData 128a

D pWrtScaleLog PI

D LogData 128a

/Free

EXEC SQL

Set option naming=*SYS, commit=*none;

EXEC SQL

INSERT INTO SCALELOG (RECKEY,:LOGDATA) VALUES(DEFAULT,:LogData)

;

return;

AFAIK, if you are calling an external program (extpgm on the PR) the parameters must be passed by reference (the parameters are pointers to the real data.)

If SCALELOGR is an existing program that you want to reuse then you probably need to wrapper it into a service program.

Or maybe create a UDF over SCALELOGR that specifies the correct parameter passing convention that matches pass by reference. (I'd have to go read the SQL Reference manual to be more precise.)

Or you could try in the SQL something like CALL 'SCALELOGR'(char('A log Entry',128)). Thought from your SQL it is not clear whether SCALELOGR actually does the write to the file or returns data to be written to the file. If the later, then forget the CALL.

Hi Jack

With that prototype you need to pass a variable that is exactly 128 long, I think. You can't pass an expression or literal value to it. If you want to do the call this way, put CONST on the parameter keywords.

I know I'm a noob. I created a program to write a record to a log

file, code below....

I thought my other programs could use something like

pWrtScaleLog('This is a log entry')

but the compiler says parameter 1 is not valid as pass by reference.

What do I need to change?

Thanks, Jack
