In more recent endeavors, I've been running mine interactive during testing
then doing submits on them, once in production.

I'd be interested in hearing more about your use of the spawn() routine?

Be aware that once your JVM starts, the classpath is set. If you started
the JVM earlier in any other way in your sessions, then the classpath could
have been wrong for your spreadsheet program. For this reason, I try to
run java programs in batch as much as possible. I even use the spawn()
routine to run in batch and wait for completion to simulate interactive
functionality.
