Actually, technically, it is *treating* the file as program-described,
and (with the exception of importing the record layout at compile time)
it's *precisely* the technique I mentioned.
A useful technique, but *ONLY* if you can be truly justified in
asserting that your program can deal with *ANY* changes to the file.
Which makes the "importing the record layout at compile time" part of
questionable value.
Not for the casual programmer. Or the faint of heart. But a very useful
technique, nonetheless.
