How would one implement security into this model so that that i application knows who is on the other end and if they are allowed to get that data? My initial guess would be the developers on both end would need to somehow build that into the apps

That is exactly the point. XMLSERVICE is a SIMPLE, FLEXIBLE, and GENERIC interface to all your IBM i applications. It is easy to understand and can be used from any platform/language.

XMLSERVICE exposes your RPG program as a webservice or stored
procedure using a generic XML interface.
Brian,
I just reread the article that you wrote for System i Network which provided an introduction to XMLSERVICE:
http://bit.ly/xwIJ7E
Only this time it struck me that the XMLSERVICE interface is a lot more strait-forward and easier to understand than those defined by WSDL and SOAP specifications. Yet the XMLSERVICE interface provides for a lot of flexibility in defining input parameters and data types passed to it. WSDL and SOAP make sense conceptually to me; at a high level. But their implementations still don't make sense to me. And much of the documentation I've read is beyond comprehension. I often feel left out of the loop when it comes to SOAP based web services.
Which makes XMLSERVICE a refreshing alternative.
