If you get the chance, ask her if there could be a compiler switch to automatically ADD those variables during the compile - whenever the compiler saw a function, it would create a hidden variable of the correct type. It's not perfect; it wouldn't allow you to debug production code, for example. But it would go a long way toward addressing the issue.

Agreed 100% Joe.

It has been on the enhancement list for RPG for a long time now. It does require compiler changes because (as you no doubt guessed) in many cases there is no variable as such that records the status. Just as there is no debuggable return value from a subprocedure. Another nice-to-have.

I'll be seeing Barbara at the TUG meeting tomorrow - must remember to ask her if there's any chance of seeing this or do we need a concerted PMR campaign!
