Bill -- that technique was required prior to V5R2. In V5R2, O_TEXT_CREAT was added to eliminate that need.

Also, as of V5R1, you should be using O_CCSID instead of O_CODEPAGE.

Also, any time I've seen someone specify CCSID 437, it was a mistake. I doubt very much that it's the optimal choice for anything you're doing.

And for Pete, he *really* needs to use O_CCSID and CCSID 1208. The JSON standard requires UTF-8.
