Keep in mind that if you are actually expecting non-numeric values with any regularity, a Monitor block will write error messages out to the job log. I wish there was a way to not do so, but I was pretty much shut down when I suggested that to Alison Butterill. Since then I wrote a couple procedures I use to pull out job log entries caused by expected errors.

Another option would be to use %check to avoid the job log messages.

However, if job log entries are of no concern, Monitor should be perfect.

Alan;

Monitor;
X = %Dec(%Trim(charField) : 13 : 0);

On-Error;
// Non decimal data in charField

EndMon;

You may or may not need/want the %Trim.

Morning all
my brain is still stuck in neutral even though I've had a large number of cups of coffee

I am sure that I have done this before, but I cannot locate it I have a 13 character field that can contain a number of any length with leading and/or trailing blanks I am pretty sure that I have used %dec to validate that the field contains numeric data and will give an error if a blank is somewhere other than trailing or leading Does any one know what I am talking about?
