I've given a lot of thought to this. This is what I think IBM needs to do:
Write an IBM i runtime that emulates the IBM i on Windows/Linux/Mac, with
restrictions that would prevent it from being a viable server or a
replacement for an actual Power System. That said, it MUST be robust
enough that it can be used to develop applications on it. I think they
should give it away, but if they charge a reasonable price for it, that is
better than nothing. At the very least, give it to colleges and students
so the pool of developers and IBM i experts begins to grow again.
