Sorry. Maybe I wasn't clear.

I like to write software that matches the least common denominator between the systems I use. (Linux, FreeBSD, QShell, PASE) so that the software will work on all of these systems.

You're absolutely right that if I use a FreeBSD-only feature, it won't work on non-FreeBSD systems. So I don't use those. That's what I mean by "least common denominator".

Well, this one plus the millions of others that are running on Linux. Add
in HP-UX and Cygwin, et cetera... yeah, I'd say it's a worthwhile risk.

Have you forgotten that the point of this thread is to run it on IBM i? Not Linux, Cygwin or HP-UX.

And by making it compatible with the native version of sed, you'll also have compatibility with AIX, *BSD, as well as compatibility Linux, Cygwin, and HP-UX.

So the choice is between compatibility with everything, or compatibility with a subset that doesn't include the system you're developing for.

but keep in mind how small this one detail is... it's definitely NOT worth arguing back and forth about. So I'm going to stop here.
