My point was that it is clearer (and I still hold that it USUALLY is)

Yet there is a point where deep nesting becomes a hindrance to understanding, and a structure like the first example helps reduce the nesting by excluding simple cases. So we are now back to it depends on the situation, and you need to code for readability rather than just globally applying a few readability guidelines. Some guidelines can lead to conflicting styles.
