I like the elephant eating analogy. When a person who just knows RPG, and
never used any LE looks at that list, they may run away screaming back to
their comfortable RPG box. I know, they may find their box moved out in the
parking lot with the rest of their personal items when they are replaced.
But, he may have the list mastered and get replaced anyway but someone fresh
out of College or a foreign country who will work for a lot less.
I know it sometimes feels like we are eating the elephant while he is still
alive, and he is not too happy about it. I am not looking for a job, but I
like to see what skills are asked for in the ads for RPG programmers. From
what I have seen SQL the skill most in demand. I have never seen an ad that
asks for RPG,SQL,JAVA,PHP,HTML,JS,VB.NET(I know that one!) and on and on.
I do have some time to learn on my job, I am thankful for that, and also
thankful that I have a job for that matter. It has got to be frustrating to
know that you need to learn, yet have no time. Some people are also
committed outside of work taking care of their families, so they have no
time there either.
