edit code as variable in %editc()

hey all,

is there a way to use %editc using a variable as the actual code?

for instance:

D $ecd S 1a
D $alpha S 10

$ecd = 'L'
alpha = %editc(number:$ecd)

when I try this, I get a compile error:

The second parameter $ECD for %EDITC is not a character
constant of length 1.

seems like a no brainer to me, but is it really possible this isn't allowed?
