... so ... mess with the environment of a whole system or of one job. If
I would have the choice I would configure the environment of that one
job (f. e. changing the environment variables for PATH and LIBPATH).
And I don't think that GCC wants a link to exist. It probably needs some
folders to exists and these folders should best exist on the QOpenSys
file system and not on the root file system.

The symbolic link is fine, and is required if you want to use 7Zip from
qsh as well as from PASE (it works in both places if you have that
link). Your problem is that you need to install gcc from the link on
Scott's website. BTW, gcc will want that link to exist as well. Your
life will be a lot easier with it than without it.

This belongs in the midrange-l forum.
I have installed 7Zip to my i, and add the symbolic link as bellow
ln -s /usr/local /QOpenSys/usr/local
And BTW, I wouldn't make a symbolic link from the root file system
into
the QOpenSys file system. The root file system has not he same
features
as the QOpenSys file system (f. e. case sensitivity).
In general, this is OK if you know what you're doing. However, I agree
that
you shouldn't try to create a link between /QOpenSys/usr/local and
/usr/local.
