because such a large percentage of the audience just glazed-over when
they saw it.

I encountered that difficulty too. My solution was to define the DS name as follows:

/if defined(BASED_STG)
D Qmh_Rcvpm_RCVM0100...
D DS
D BASED( @Qmh_Rcvpm_RCVM0100 )
/else
D Qmh_Rcvpm_RCVM0100...
D DS INZ
/endif
D Qmh_RCVM0100_Bytes_Rtnd...
D 10I 0

... etc. ...

That way the "vast majority" can use normal data structures (the default behaviour) and those willing to embrace so-called advanced techniques can do so with just a little extra effort.

On later releases I've added support for QUALIFIED instead of including the "qualification" in the sub-field name.

Not sure about the TEMPLATE support (wish they'd named it TYPEDEF like COBOL and C though). When I get to VRM610 I'll experiment with it.

Simon Coulter.
