Its not clear to me exactly what you are doing, but possibly something like:

c select
c when %subst(SomeField: 1: 3) = 'A '
c ... c when %subst(SomeField: 1: 3) = 'B '
c ...
c when %subst(SomeField: 1: 3) = 'C '
c ...
c when %subst(SomeField: 1: 3) = 'P '
c ...
c other
c ...
c endsl

should work for you and perform reasonably well.

I have to know if a string begins with the 3 characters 'A ', 'B ', 'C ' or 'P '.

I was going to use %substr. If I just put the string in a 3A work variable and compare that, will this be more economical? But then I wouldn't be able to use the bif %substr.

Thanks
