Personally though I would pass a pointer to a data structure,
which may/could be different for each pgmId that the router
program would handle with a length and formatId, similar to
many IBM APIs, also known as the poor man's procedure overloading.

router PR ExtPgm('ROUTER')
pgmid 10I 0 Const
errormessage 50A Const Varying
dsBase * Const
dsSize 10I 0 Const
dsFormat 10A Const

Duane, you've ended up with something very close to the real thing.

The router actually looks like this :

router PR ExtPgm('ROUTER')
pgmid 10I 0 Const
errormessage 50A Const Varying
parm1 LIKE( reffld1 )Const
parm2 LIKE( reffld2 )Const
parm....
dsFormat 10A Const
parmsout *

There are actually 5 "optional" input parameters plus obligatory pgmid and errormessage. Manager has tried to be as flexible as possible and try to fit all possible cases! I think it would be better to replace these also with a pointer.

In your example, what is the importance of passing dsSize and dsFormat ?

Thanks
