Joe is saying by using prototypes, you can make either call with the
same prototype

d MyPgm pr extpgm('MYPGM')
d parm1 10a
d parm2 10a
d parm3 10a options(*NOPASS)

/free
if %parms() >= 3;
MyPgm(p1:p2:p3);
else;
MyPgm(p1:p2);
endif;
/end-free

Not really less executable code, just less lines of source assuming
you don't place each parm on it's own line.

Well, had I gone a little further, I could have reduced lines of code.
You could use a single prototype with a *NOPASS on the third
variable and reuse that prototype for both calls, and then
you will have fewer lines of code.

Tell me that again!

I declare MyProc with 3 parms and *nopass on the 3rd.

I still have to decide how to call MyProc depending upon whether I receive 2 parms or 3. Don't I?

I don't see the difference.
