3) Modern languages, like Java, cannot return output through their parameter list. If you want your RPG code to be modern, you shouldn't return data through the parameter list, either.

Of course Java can pass data both ways through parameters; there are lots of calls in Java's own runtime system that wouldn't work if they didn't, and anybody who tells you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something, most likely something that isn't any good.

To get data back out through parameters, you just have to (either explicitly or implicitly) pass pointers.
