I downloaded MMAIL about 10 weeks ago, and yes it still dispatches mail through the IBM i SMTP server. That may be helpful in some cases - you don't have to code at the socket level. On the other hand, as Brad Stone sometimes points out, it doesn't do SMTP authentication, if that's a requirement.
But I currently use MMAIL in an Email client I which wrote to work with Midrange Lists, and Yahoo Lists. And it has been working fine:
